When it comes to decorating leather, carving is the most expressive, allowing the artist to illustrate from simple letters to complex scenery or portraits and can add a very personal element to any article.
Carving has been within me since a chance meeting in the North America’s and has quickly progressed into a bit of an obsession. Apart from carving on saddles, the majority of my carving is for brief cases, handbags and book covers or folders. The more demanding carvings with high detail are usually for framed scenes as shown by the sample in the border below. The brief case was for an officer in the signals, the CBR 900 for Harley style saddle bags. The Plains Indian journal was made for the owner to record the progress of their new horses training and finally the Celtic handbag was made as a present for the clients wife. I carved John Wayne for myself for a journal I use to record various measurements of tack and braided knots. |
